Hi guys, I need to know if it is now compulsory to install a mains fed smoke alarm in a new kitchen and diner extension area and if so what about the existing installation?

Hi,

You can wire them from a local, generaly used lighting circuit as long as it has a means of isolating the smokes without interupting the lights. If all the circuits are RCD protected there is an advantage in supplying the smokes from a regularly used lighting circuit.
