Just pondering cost of FiT/PV install -v- cost of 200 miles of new Grid to connect +50kWh wind farms etc. to existing Grid network.
Base assumption surface [pylon etc.] £1.8million to £8 million per km. Sub-surface £18 million to £22 million.
Exact details not known but assume 90% pylon at average £4.9 million per km and 10% sub-surface at £20 million per km = £1282 million.
If installs were undertaken at £12,000 the cost of Grid upgrade would provide Solar PV to 106,833 properties.
Someone may be better at maths, or know details of what is planned. Please post if you have details as this may move the debate from it's current position of 'subsidising middle class folk in the South East'.
Historically location of generation and point of utilisation were closely related. Putting wind farms in the Irish Sea, North Sea and Scottish Highlands seems to depart from the established arrangements.
Add the cost of a couple of Nuclear PS up-grades, a few new gas fired PS - it would soon be possible to provide every domestic property with Solar PV free of charge!
