Hello, I work as a general 'maintenance man' in a commercial property (offices) but have a background in electrical work and have qualifications including 2391 etc... I do not do much in the way of new installs at my job BUT I have had to put the odd new light in here... extra socket there... should I be part of a body such as NICEIC or Elecsa is my question, as it is a commercial property I'm under the understanding that it is not compulsory? am i correct??

part p does not apply to commercial or industrial works. there's no requirement for you to be robbed by one of the scams.

If there is a dwelling on site it may.

Even if there is a property or dwelling on the site if you don't do any work on it I would say you don't have to. Commercial and industrial don't come under the remit of part P as anyone carrying out any work on that premises should be deemed a competent person under CDM 2015. PartP was introduced to protect home owners from their own stupidity and or lack professional training and skill set.
