Discuss Subcontracting - What risks/Must do's? in the Business Related area at ElectriciansForums.net

My family run a small trade outfit supplying plumbing, gas, kitchen & bathroom installations and we're constantly being asked if we do electrical work (domestic).

We don't have any electrical qualifications between us so we turn the work down, but it's kind of a no brainer to begin subcontracting the work out.

Subcontracting isn't new to us, but subcontracting to a trade with safety & mandatory qualifications we'd like to do our homework before we send guys down to our clients properties.

Have you guys got any advice, from your point of view, of all the pitfalls and risks that we're going to encounter & if possible your opinion on how we should proceed in subbing work to electricians?

Our company has zero electric accreditation or anything of the like, but as far as i'm aware as long as the electricians we use are up to scratch we'll be okay?

Many thanks in advance!

there's a lot of difference between subbing work out and passing it to an electrician. i.e. will you be quoting and billing the clients, or just passing the work on, maybe for a commission?

I usually use one of these. If you examine it you will see you expect all points to be in the affirmative. If the subby can prove the content of this you are pretty well covered. It is a template however you can adapt it. Don't know if I will get in trouble sharing it... gulp! And you could always invest in one in-house with training? Or employ maybe?

That PDF is great, nice one for that!

Telectrix, the contract will be between our company and the customer, with the work entirely subcontracted to the subby. I also assume CIS payments are needed for electrical installs/repairs/etc
