Yes piranha nuts have four small spikes on the back of them, this cuts in to the enclosure wall and allows single handed tightening of the gland into them. This is what the tag-line of ‘they bite’ refers to on the front of the packet.

Designers of piranha nut thought the same. But upon extensive testing they found they could not guarantee good earth, that’s why they now require flying lead.
As the piranha nut is much more substantial than a serrated washer, I would not use this method based on thier extensive testing.
 
Metal box - use serrated washers on each cable termination. By far the best solution. It acts as both ground connection and helps to prevent the lock ring from slacking off over time

Proper tightening will prevent it slackening off over time. Serrated washers are only partially effective for this, nordlock washers are about the only thing that really work for this.
