Switches in Flexible Power Cords

It has recently been pointed out to me that EN 60335-1 section 24.2 that switches cannot be used in flexible cords. Why then can I buy a table lamp from a major UK store with a switch in the cord? Are there exceptions to the rule?

i would question whether they class a lamp as an appliance, think they refer to appliances like washers fridges etc., but that is only a thought

So I can't plug a washing maching into an extention lead with a switched socket on the end?

yes you can, the switch is not in the cord
