Hello is there a way to test thermocouples with a meter other than via resistance test as sometimes you have to test thermocouples at diff temps so unsure on whats a good reading? I usually have to test something like a PT100.

Does your meter have a temp' readout if so you can buy plug in thermocouplers .. get 2 and if they both agree you can kind of rely on them against the subject thermocoupler. If you are inspecting thermocouplers that are doing temp' critical jobs then you need to invest in more expensive equipment that has regular calibration.

Also check the thermocoupler on the equipment is wired and connected correctly with thermocoupler joints (not common connectors) and the insulation is good - the introduction of a brass or copper connection alter the resistive component of the differing metal and sends the accuracy out.

You get thermocouple testers / simulators. Fluke do a nice one (714b), I have a Mastech unit which does the same thing but is a lot cheaper, I only use it maybe twice a year at most and couldn't warrant spending the amount for the Fluke. It tests all types of thermocouple and can also simulate a thermocouple output at a specific temperature so you can test the accuracy of the PCB as well as the thermocouple itself.

Personally if you are doing any kind of amount of testing of thermocouples I would invest in the right equipment.
