My wife has been nagging me about testing our security alarm for a few days now. Apparently someone filled her ears about the necessity of testing the security systems once every year and now she behind me to get it done. I know that it should be done, but the fact is that I am a novice in this area and don't want to admit it to her. Can someone help me here. The system is DSC-PC1616.
Thanks in advance to everyone who is willing to help.

Hi: In the DSC user manual it will tell you how to put the system into walk test mode. Once in walk test mode, walk through the property and activate each detector to make sure the system logs that a detector has been tripped.
Once you've done that if you have an external Sounder put the system into Sounder test & make sure the external Sounder activates. If the system is monitored by Central station then you need to inform them before starting your tests and once you've finished. When finished, don't forget to restore to normal day mode.

By the way you should test the system monthly not yearly, I actually used to be a DSC service agent but it's been a long time & I put the manuals away safe.
DSC used to keep all legacy manuals on their website for download.

Thank you @Specialist, I searched google and found a blog that gives some tips on the this. Here is the blog: Tech Tip: How to Test Your DSC Power Series PC1616 PC1832 and PC1864 Security System to Ensure its Proper Functionality - http://www.fire-monitoring.com/tech-tip-testing-your-dsc-power-series-pc1616-pc1832-and-pc1864-security-system-to-ensure-its-proper-functionality/ but I'll go by your advice too. And thanks for that tip about monthly testing. I was under the impression that we need to do this only yearly.

another test you should do is to activate the bell test with the mains disconnected from the alarm ( usually pull the fuse in the Spur connection to it).this will tell youwhether the back-up battery is holding up
