Is it normal not to get a guarantee with underfloor heating. I had underfloor heating put in and so far I have not received the guarantee. The company have not received the form which he filled in whilst I was there but has not sent it in to the company involved. Also I discovered that he had actually charged me a much higher price than what he had actually paid for the underfloor heating! Is this normal practice for electricians to do that. I feel a bit annoyed about it as I already paid extra to have the laminate put down!

How long has it been?...

You will pay more than what the electrician paid for it as he needs to add his bit onto it...for going for it etc...

Also have you not spoke to the electrican or company who did the work?...

did he give you any other paperwork when he did the job, underfloor heating is a notifiable job, if you never you will probaly find your guarantee would be useless anyway, if you did get a cert with the job then chase him up and get him to sort the guarantee out

Why does he need to add his bit on! I already paid for it to be laid without the underfloor heating he would not have been able to work and hence not earn any money. I could have ordered it myself but I let him do it I mean all you have to do is give the measurement of the room or rooms and the company tell you how much you need and organize everything ie underlay and thermostat etc! If that is the norm than no trades person is ever going to order anything for me again lol:93:

He did fill in some papers but when I spoke to the company who supplied the UFH they said they would get on to him themselves but so far nothing. I will look through the papers and see if he has given the correct papers he did do a safety check of the electrics.

I will have a look to see I have a certificate as I said he did fill in some papers not sure if I got a certificate with it. I will check. Thank you for your replies

He still has to spend some time ordering it, even if he is on the phone or internet. Time is money, and no one works for nothing, not even you i bet!

It is normal for ALL tradesmen to put on a mark up, just like all other businesses do. if you pay 99p for a bottle of sauce at Asda, i can tell you Asda will have paid a lot less for it, how would they be able to trade if they charged you what they paid for it?

Cheers................Howard

SurreyGirl - this is a common problem that we find nowadays in so much as people that used to rely on competent and reliable tradesmen to source 'specialist' parts can now find them with a few internet searches and then assume that they're being ripped off. I'm both a competent electrician as well as a competent businessman. I therefore make no apologies for reserving the right to add a few quid onto a significant component where appropriate, as I have gone through the process of sourcing, 'bank rolling', accounting, bank charges etc etc on your behalf. In return, you get the right to come and knock on my door if it goes wrong. If you want to save yourself that few quid then please be my guest, I'll still come and install it for you, but if in two years time the supplier has gone bust and you're in a pickle with a broken system then you'll get little sympathy! I actually suggest to some of my customers to go and source direct (and I'll even give them phone numbers and part numbers) as it makes warranty issues easier. NOT EVERYONE IS OUT TO RIP YOU OFF!! Though, there are some that are, admittedly.

As far as your papework is concerned - you should have been left with; 1) Installation Certificate [3 parts] by the installer, 2) any warranty information and 3) should receive at some point in a few weeks a Part P notification from a Part P scheme.

Item 2 can probably be resolved between you and the manufacturers if they're nice about it, but if 1 & 3 don't happen then I strongly suggest you report the installer to your local trading standards as they may be trying to pretend to be a Part P registered installer when not.

You should have received an Electrical Installation Certificate along with the associated Test Schedule, if this was a registered electrician he should have told you about the warranty scheme provided or available depending on which trade association he is with. I would also have expected him to leave you any forms supplied by the underfloor heating company required for their product guarantee.

It took all of 3 minutes to order it for that I have paid 100's of pounds on top of that. No thank you I will order parts myself after all without the part you cant work and earn the money I am paying to have it installed. If I buy tomato sauce I go to the shop the electrician is not the shop he is the in-between. I call it day light robbery myself I would have paid a damn sight less if I had ordered it myself. They gave me a quote over the phone and it was 100's of £'s cheaper.Who is to say this electrician will still be around in a few years time, but I am sure the heating company will be.

Few quid!! if only it were a few quid I would not have minded people are just plain greedy.

I will try the manufacturer again as they appear to know him to see if I can get the guarantee

Wow! Please can I give you a job as my buyer? I mean, a person who instinctively knows exactly what the right component is, without reference to any professional body, psychic knowledge of the installation environment, dimensions and ratings. You could save me a small fortune!! Normally, I have to use two and half decades of experience to understand the best solution for the job, ring/email around half a dozen or so suppliers to find the best deal, come and measure/inspect, loads of stuff.

hundreds on top is over the top. but a small mark-up on materials is normal. it costs time and money to get the materials for you.

Customer orders parts, if they're wrong or faulty the customer will have to pay for the extra time spent by the tradesman on a return visit and sorting out the correct parts.

Tradesman orders parts, if they're wrong or faulty the tradesman suffers the cost of lost time.

Was the prospective cost of the floor the same for the O.P as it was for the Electrician, or as he is known he must be a regular buyer and probably gets a better discount.

If you Buy parts for your car elsewhere and then try and get a garage to fit them, all you'll get is a big No.

Not enough info really, two sides and all that. But, in general, you only get what you see.
ps. I like the psychic reference. Who'd need a 5 week course if they were born so gifted.
