Can we see inside the box. Will check with the neighbour before going for the cut
Yes, that box is quite antique! I switched off the main breaker and had a look inside, wiring looks neat so just left it as is

I'd check with the wife/girlfriend first actually...
It's quite a big incision...
I love the way the joists are held together with redundant galvanised tray work.
I reckon that's a truss nail plate,fella

Apologies,dude...had a long day at the NEC,fondling weaponry
Got one like it in our loft Dave plastic with Volex on it all the cables have stickers on ends eg switch 1, light 1 etc. There appears to be an octopus box underneath the cable, they’re a rare sight these days!
Did it have porcelain connectors inside ?
That box was well done internally SC, and most of the lighting cables back in 1957 appear to have a cpc too ! It's a little bit of history and also a little sad as whoever did it will be very elderly or gone by now.
We have all been there. As promised... some pics of the 'Octopus'

And for the younger members who's experience of old rubber cable may be very limited... here's a selection of cables. On the outside, the one on the bottom looks in reasonable condition, but when I was pulling it out, you could hear the insulation inside cracking so I peeled it open to take a look. One of the joys of rubber... over time (or with a liberal application of heat) it can dry out, become brittle and just fall away when touched.
