usb charger sockets

Anyone fitted these new sockets with integral usb charger slots? I've found you have to disconnect a supply wire when doing IR test.. might seem obvious with hindsight but caught me out the first time :dunce2:

Fitted a masterplug one from wickes in my house other week, it said in the destructions you could IR them and they even state the reading it should give, but leaving them connected will give you misleading results anyway.

Don't see how you can IR test them connected.. Does the transformer magically disconnect for the test? Or maybe they were designed by VW?

Still dont understand these, how do you charge your device when away from home, not in the same room as the USB socket, what happens when the USB socket stops working. Also I believe there is no BS at the minute for the USB socket!

Well I suppose it frees up a socket or two.. That means even more power hungry devices can be connected to overload the circuit. Means more repair work! Yippee!!

So if there was another fault elsewhere on the circuit of say 1milli ohm or more, the reading of the socket would mask it as the tester would record the lowest reading of 0.4mohm!? The lowest acceptable reading is 1 Megohm!! And it doesn't say across which wires either..

The lowest acceptable is 2 IMHO

I would presume it would give this reading between L and N like other connected loads, neons etc etc still connected on circuit. So obviously would need disconnected to achieve accurate results, unless you are doing eicr etc where you can get away with testing to earth only in most cases

Personally I wouldn't install the combined units , I would go down the route of a switched fused spur feeding a stand alone USB socket if I were asked , but haven't been asked yet myself..

I have been looking at these, only advantage I can see is freeing up some socket outlets.

This has already been discussed in depth on here, approx Dec 2014. Do a search on the forum as there are some links to various independent test companies with surprising results and some good info as well.
For the time being I am not touching them.

I did a board change a couple of weeks ago, the bloke had 10, yes ten of these USB sockets, and yes they give a false load, and did I disconnect them? Like hell did I.

At least you knew what was giving or coukd give odd test results

I suppose there was no guarantee it was them, but as it was between line and neutral I wasn't too concerned. Everything else was fine. I'm sure they give s reading of about 0.7 ohms if I remember? It may have been more I can't remember now, but more than a neon or RCD spur which usually gives about 0.33 ohms

I put one in my house, to reduce the cutter. One of the usb sockets has stopped working, 6 months old!

waste of time installing them, there is no standard for 5v usb transformers a plugin one would be much better.

if you have a lot of devices a powered usb hub would be a lot better to charge multiple devices.

my stepdad has installed a couple at home and i wouldnt trust them with my kit.

besides like i said before it wont charge all your devices as quick as the genuine chargers
