"Air Fuel Synthesis from Stockton-on-Tees has produced five litres of petrol since August when it switched on a small refinery that manufactures gasoline from carbon dioxide and water vapour."

"We can convert renewable electricity into a more versatile, useable and storable form of energy, namely liquid transport fuels."

"We think that by the end of 2014, provided we can get funding, we can be producing petrol using renewable energy and doing it on a commercial basis."

AFS uses a process which captures CO2 from a point source or the atmosphere, electrolyses water to make hydrogen and combines the CO2 and hydrogen to make hydrocarbon fuels. The process uses established synthetic fuels and chemical techniques, but with unique variations.

And then watch the petrol companies buy up the patents and bury it ...

more like wasting renewable energy to use it in an incredibly inefficient storage medium.

I did some quick calcs on this a couple of weeks back and came up with electricity to motion efficiency figures of around 4%, so it loses 96% of the electrical energy in the multiple conversion processes.

vs around 70-80% for ac electrical to battery to forward motion via an electric motor.

If you're going to do this, then there's zero point at all in converting from methanol to diesel - this is a totally superfluous step in the process (or so says my old man, who's a professor of combustion engineering, so I tend to believe him when he says this stuff while spluttering in disbelief over a newspaper article).
