Watch out folks, there is a new Government Qualification about to be set in motion, watching Watch Dog last nigh and the they want all Smart Meter fitters will need to have a Diploma in Smart Meter installation, wonder how long it will take for the Scams to get a foothold in it?

Not rocket science is it Wilko, some of the excuses they came up with " Restricted access, meter cupboards full of household equipment"

I'm not just Part P qualified I'm screwdriver qualified as well!!

Wonder if the tool manufactures will cotton to a niche market "Smart Meter screwdriver sets with instructions"? now being a Tool Tart I will have to have a set. Oh and the set will need to be a torque type wont it????

From experience of seeing some meter fitters in action, it will be a battery screwdriver

Some electricians I work with use an impact driver for db connections I kid you not!
Had a argument about why to not use one, thing is the young apprentices working with them pick it up and think it's fine.

Really Pete. Tend to be the ones that have got into meter fitting "cold", from unrelated backgrounds.
I have met some very good lads too though, electricians that have turned to the job.

Shocking practice that. My mate sometimes uses a battery driver with low clutch setting. He justifies it by finishing them off with his torque driver. Still makes me wince though.

Bad news you're right Ian picking up bad habits as a youngster, will be hard to to get out of.

I can imagine, ask them if so and so tells you to jump off this building would you jump? If you're going to do it, do it right the first time, works for me.

I won't lie this is exactly what I do.
I use a 12v Milwaukee drill and then go through after with a torque driver.

The only justification I have for this, is after 2nd fixing day in day out, for long periods, using just a screwdriver I started to get numb hands on my days off.

I'm 26 and plan to be able to successfully wipe my bum in my 70's so I've made adjustments. Don't get me wrong, my first fuseboard with a drill had 1 or 2 stripped screw heads I then got a modulo 2 screw bit and that solved my problem. I think I've perfected my technique by using my drill to tighten up everything just enough so all I need to do is go through half a turn to tighten to the required torque with my screwdriver.

But I still hide my drill if any apprentices come in while I'm doing a fuseboard . Damage limitation.
