Hi there,

I'm looking into setting up a business which will be working in peoples properties. Part of the work that i will need to undertake is the removal of wall sockets and replacement on new ones and maybe the same with light switches. What qualifcations / certificates will i need to undertake the work legally?

Thanks

Craig

You don't need any qualifications to do electrical work in the UK.

You do however need to be aware of safe isolation procedure to keep you and your operatives safe. Handy guide for safe isolation is available on the ESC website.
The electricity at work regs would be handy to read through, and approved voltage testers are a must for isolation.

No.....you will know how to do it properly, but the law allows any unqualified Tom,Dick or Abdul to have a go if they so wish.

and your qualifications and experience will be on your side if and when the shxt hits the fan....whereas a plumber doing a CU change will have little or no defence.

jusr reading the htread title and not the posts, my answer has to be............ a screwdriver.

no qualifcations but if u kill someone or set a house on fire with a switch or socket u have changed , i will give u a good price for ur van and tools because u will need a good lawyer

That's not the point. You wouldn't be in trouble for doing electrical work you would be in trouble for manslaughter as a result of the electrical work carried out.

no formal qualifications required but the same would be said for replacing brakes on cars and i know i wouldnt be charging people for doing that and sleeping at night just because ive done it once and think its easy

It's a slippery road....
First it's changing a light switch and socket, then it's extending a circuit, then it's changing a CU and carrying out a rewire.... Seen many an odd-job-man seduced by the offer of cash for a bit of sparkying :)
