Got an e-mail from an estate agent we look after rented properties for:

"Hi,

As discussed, the tenant of this property has advised that in order for them to have a smart meter installed the meter in the property needs to be changed to a two rate meter.

However, an electrician will need to test the tenant’s appliances to see if they will run off a two rate meter.

Can you advise of the cost of this?"

I don't understand - does a two rate meter supply a different flavour of electricity? Am I actually really dense and am missing something? I'm confused........
 
Tell the agent to tell the tenant that if they give them written permission for a smart meter then the tenant has to pay for any associated costs. That'll put them off.

Then go to the EA's and give the 22 year old in the shiny suit working in lettings a clip around the ear.

No mate not you, dense applies to the dense Estate Agent
 
Presumably they are asking if the appliances have time clocks to control their operating hours, because if the supply is currently split with one supply switched on only during off peak hours then the off peak appliances would just be left switched on locally and only powered off peak.
Changing to a two rate meter would mean the supply was on all the time and off peak appliances would be costing a lot of money running during day time and would need timer control either at the board via contactors or local timers at each appliance.
