Rewiring house questions

Hi everyone, I've rewired my first house by myself - I havnt done a great deal of domestic work, mainly industrial and commercial. But I've got a few of questions that I havnt been able to find answers for. I think I know how to do them but would just like some conformation to boost my confidence with it lol.


1. On one lighting circuit I've taken the feed to 3 different rooms, and they are feeding 2 pendant lights and one extract fan and in the kitchen - 10 led downlights. My question is will these 10 downlights be ok on one switch? Or will it overload the circuit?

2. The external shed requires a feed. The shed is approximately 25m away from the consumer unit. My idea is to run a 2 core 6mm SWA to an IP rated adaptable box on the side of the house and connect a 6mm t and e into this and run it back to the board. Would this be acceptable? I know that I need an earth stake near the shed.

3. The board is moving the meter to an external location (the consumer unit has also been moved). But is over 3m away from the meter. I was going to use a KMF switch that would be boxed in somehow and use an SWA out of if to an IP rated adaptable box and then feed the consumer unit. Does this sound ok or does anyone have any other suggestions? I've never dealt with the electricity company directly before and the customer has spoke to them so I'm not sure what they'll leave me with.

Well seeing as "they" are going to be signing it off, wouldn't you be better asking them what "they"' want to see?

danny. 2 pieces of advice.]

1. do not feed the shed supply from a RCD. this will cause problems if it trips and customer has to go from shed to house to reset. RCD protection for the shed IN THE SHED.

2. as for notifying. do your testing, complete an EIC, use job for assessment with elecsa, then notify thtough them when you are a member.

Thanks, I remembered I read that somewhere but only after I asked the question. I'm not sure I'll be doing enough of my own domestic work to join as a member tbh.

what's this nonsense about banging in a rod at the shed when you'll most likely have a perfectly good TN system at the house? and 3 core SWA is the way to go.

Agreed. Although I would probably opt for 2-core rather than 3-core, subject to proving by calculation that the armour will be adequate.

He would need to see the work whilst it is being erected. After all inspection comes before testing, and is also more important than the testing. That's why it is called inspection and testing, and not testing and inspection.

A bit like if you are planning on having a three way and the other bloke is going to be finishing the job off, he will need to be there throughout watching things get erected and installed correctly before leaving his mark, he will want to make sure the job has been done properly.

Correction, you’re a DIY chancer.

Believe it or not the hierarchy goes:

Industrial.
Commercial.
Domestic.
Sewer cleaner.
Domestic installer.

As a DIY chancer you should be accorded every assistance. Out through the door.

There are many qualified and competent electricians who aren't in schemes though surely. Daz

Very true, but somewhere along the line there needs to be a scheme / register / list whatever you want to call it of people who are allowed to carry out electrical work, unless you are on the list, sorry but you are not allowed.
