Hey guys,
Hoping someone can help me. In our kitchen we have two sets of dimmable spotlights activated from a 2 switch dimmer. Since we have moved in they will occasionally flicker or switch off until you 'knock' the switch or reduce the output. Sometimes one set will just stop working for a while and then turn on again a short while later.
I have just switched out the bulbs in oir nursery with LED lights which struggled on the old dimmer switch. I switched the dimmer to a new LED one and now it works perfectly so wondering if my kitchen problem was something similar.
However ive removed the kitchen dimmer and each of the 2 switches support 40-400w. One switch supports 4 bulbs and the other supports 3.
Bulbs are spotlights and the 2 ive removed so far are 20w and 35 watt respectively. They are halogen bulbs so it doesnt look like the system is overloaded. Im now wondering if its a problem with the wiring.
This is how it was wired (and although a bit of newbie to DIY i have switched off the fuse and i have a voltage indicator to check no power supply).
There were 3 black wires all taped up (switch live?) and 3 earth wires going into the back of the box.
There were 3 red wires:
1. Going into L1 of 1st switch
2. Going into C of 1st switch
3. Going into L1 of 2nd switch
There was then a 4th piece of red wire not coming out of the wall going into the 'C' of the 2nd switch. Now it looked to me like the other end of this wire was not attached to anything else but its possible it was connecting the 2 switches together but fell out when i was taking it off?
Ive attched some pictures. Please could somebody confirm
1. The correct way to wire this set up.
2. Potential reasons why the lights are causing us issues - could it be that loose red wire?
Thankyou.
