NICEIC / ELECSA / NAPIT - how did you get on with the assessment?

Hi everybody
I would like to start a new thread : how did you get on with your NICEIC Dommestic Installer as well as Approved Contractor, ELECSA or NAPIT onsite assesment,
I would like you to share your experience with other users
- which scheme are you under?
- what jobs did you choose for the assessment and why?
- how was the assessment / assessor?
- how long have you been with NICEIC / ELECSA / NAPIT and if anything has changed over the years
- why NICEIC / ELECSA / NAPIT ?
- is there anything else to register with that someone could recommend?

hi everyone
i'm registered with elecsa, the assessor for the my area of the midlands was ray, very nice bloke friendly and did not treat it like it was a nightmare that only the few would ever get a pass from him.
did a consumer unit change at my parents house for first assessment and i made a small error on the paperwork (missed one of the boxes to be filled in!) assessor pointed this out and i filled it in there and then, no problems.
i've had cause to ring the technical helpline twice in the 8 months of being registered with them and both times the person on the other end has been patient & helpfull giving me exactly the answer i was looking for. hope others get as good from there part p scheme.

Miner69er where abouts are you? I had ray too.. very helpfull.

I used a mains change on a farmhouse (TT)
And an outdoor socket fed from RFC

Helpline is very good, If they cant answer there and then they always rang me back within 15 minutes.

They never dictate to you or talk down to you, no matter how silly your question may be to others, Elecsa always help and give you a detailed answer.

Cant fault them, From what ive heard they do more for the contractor than any other scheme.. At least i feel i'm getting better value for my yearly premium.

RFC = Ring Final Circuit.

Not sure what you mean by 1, he is saying he changed a consumer unit on a farmhouse and it was a TT earthing system.

i only needed to do the one job as this was deemed enough for the part 'p' assessment. don't know if it changes for commercial as i only do domestic (after 17 years as an engineer i'm quite happy poking around in lofts/walls they are much cleaner than 99% of factory's)
in responce to magic-sid, i'm in the leicestershire area, i won't say where exactly as we might be competing against each other

when i had my Elecsa site visit guy was fine chatted about my background which for me was mostly commercial and which big firms i'd worked for ,after checking all paper work, quals , insurance etc was in order he launched into the important bit .
thought i got a decent grilling at the time and felt i'd had me moneys worth.
used an upgrade on small town house, new CU ,loads of new circuts etc for first job.

After doin a demo of just about every test & validating the results the guy showed me the RCD ramp test on my megger 1552 which i had never used and is a handy feature .
plenty of questions on everything really so it pays to do a bit of home work if yer a bit rusty
Asked about going to the second job i had lined up but he'd seen enough apparently.
seem to recall the whole thing took around 4-5 hours.
like a lot of people have said, not as bad as you think its gonna be.
very important bit don't forget the cuppa ,he'll be glad of one and it gives you a break to recharge yer brain cells.

Had my first assesment with Elecsa today, Passed with A grade! run a submain to an outbuilding, was bricking it but the Assessor was very friendly and helpful and loved his tea and coffee.. never tried to catch me out or anything like you expect to happen (natural reaction...), So far i am very pleased with my choice and can see ill be staying with them and would recommend.

I got asked the usual questions i guess
Name and discribe the three earthing arangements
what protection is required for a cable buried in the wall
Holes in Joists (areas aloud and where not)
Maz Zs of a 32a Circuit
Max Zs of a 6a Circuit
and a few others that i cant remember right now.

in the inspection the assessor looked around my install and when it came to the testing i was asked to do a direct Zs and a Full RCD test (all 6 tests)

Would also like to thank everyone on this forum for their posts, with useful infomation, pointers and advise, they helped me realise there really isnt anything to worry about as long as you know your Regs, can do the job and confident with the meter... Oh and especialy the advive about getting the kettle on!

He was a really easy going man put me right at ease guided me thru had to do Ze test and RCD test he went thru all the necessary paperwork and even dropped off a few good tips for me, looking forward to next year now!

hi what type of paperwork? your companie's stuff? i m just starting being on my own so i dont have too much paperwork at the moment, was it important for the assessor?

the paperwork needed for the assessment is all written down in the pack elecsa send when you apply to join. this will include needing the following, £2,000,000 public liability cover (they need to see the cover note), electricity at work regs book, risk assesment forms etc. but don't worry all the forms required are sent with the pack as examples so all you have to do is insert your name at the top.
the list they send you is comprehensive and all the items need to be there for the assessment just tick them all off the list as you sort it out one by one to make sure they are all in place.

I sent off my payment and application mid April and got the assessment date for 21st June.
