Hi clicon357,
You're right about the gearbox issues ( I've started one thread) apparently it's aknown problem along with trigger failure and also the uncanny ability to suck in more dust than you would believe which gums up the brushes .
I'm trying to get a repair from Makita but they want to see the units first before pricing it.

Looking at the latest Bosch ( GSB 18 VE-2-LI 18v) the one with the all metal chuck , at least with them if you register online you get 3 years warranty and the torque is stated at 85nM's 5 more than the Makita.

Cheers,
Lofty

**** It! Dust magnet you say, it gets better. I've just chased out for new sockets and made more dust than..........well a dusty thing. And I was using the drill in all that to fix the back boxes. Lets hope it goes t!ts up within 12 months. So far, so good though I like everything about it except for the light. I did consider the Bosch but think they were only 2.6Ah batteries?

(Still live and learn, choice of two & I married the hairdresser rather than the caterer. As my mum said "Kissin don't last, cookin do!")

Got that one myself Lofty. Its the new RS series drill, nice and small but loads of grunt, good for going through joists. Batteries last well and charge in 20 mins

The one I was looking at comes with 2 x 3Ah batts and one of their L-Box's for storage.

I know that this thread is a couple of weeks old now but was working with a plumber the other day and got to talking about drills etc. and he's had 2 off the Makita 451's have gearbox failures in the last 3 years. He's gone back to DeWalt now.
Supposedly the newer ones now have the modified part fitted, something to do with the gear selector ring ??.

Still looking at getting the Bosch though myself, as you can get a 3 year warranty if you register on-line, not sure yet what the warranty covers or does not cover at the moment.

Lofty.

Thats the i have lofty, its tiny in size compared to other brands and it powerfull.

Warranty only covers the drill after the first year.

If you are after a 3 year warranty on everything, have a look a the Metabo range from Toolstop.

TBH, if I had seen their new range earlier i'd of gone the metabo route instead of Bosch

Hi Amp David,

Just looked up the Metabo SB 18 LTX as you said. Wow, that's some torque it has (Max torque (soft/hard): 44/100Nm) like the impuls function for tile drilling , though normally use a bit of masking tape on the tile face.

So now it's decision time.

Cheers,
Lofty
