Hi,

I need to swap out a damaged 30A junction box on an existing ring main circuit and thought I'd replace it with Wago 221 connectors and a Wago box, but got a bit concerned by the multiple ratings on the sides of the connectors.

Can I simply swap out an old 30A JB with Wagos? Will it be sufficiently rated?

Thanks in advance!

There are two ratings printed on them because current ratings are defined in different ways by different authorities. The 20A rating is as per UL approval in North America, 32A as per IEC which is what we usually work to in the UK.

However, if the joint has to be maintenance free to BS5733, then the connectors are derated to 20A because the temperature rise has to be reduced to guarantee exceptionally long lifespan. That derating never occurs on a traditional 30A JB because it's not suitable for MF locations. Cables and accessories used in a 32A RFC must be rated at least 20A so the Wago 221 is still suitable whether MF or not.
