I have nearly always used MK consumer units but recently started using a new supplier who doesnt stock MK.. They said they have Hager boards but im not sure about them, last time I one them was about 10-12 years ago and didnt like it.

From what I remember the cover was very flimsy, the plastic cover screws broke easily and the mcb`s where a nightmare to get straight..

Have they got any better since then ?

In fairness the one they showed me in the wholesalers seemed pretty solid...

i use BG or chint from choice. hager have good reports on the forum. MK are terrible.

Not sure about BG but I've used a lot of Hager boards and components and I like them. They're good quality, well thought out and generally good value for money. Chint on the other hand...maybe Chint in the UK isn't the same as the Chint I've come across, lets just say I'm not a massive Chint fan.

Nah, it's bottom of the ladder crap over here too.

Hager are great. Good reliable gear at the right price too. I always use their CUs.

A lot of praise for Hager boards then, suppose I`m going to have to try them :)

I dont get people not liking the MK boards though, Have always been my CU of choice tbh, always find I can do a nice tidy job with them and them seem pretty solid.

Metal clad are ok, but the insulated ones are flimsy, mcb's never sit straight, cover a nightmare to get on a fully loaded board.

The insulated cases are quite flexible, but quite robust. I only ever have the above problems if the board is not mounted onto a flat surface, and then any make of board can suffer these effects.

As mentioned, if they're not mounted onto a flat surface the case will distort. The other thing that will cause a problem is not putting shallow bends into the tails to reach the switch. It causes the rail to flex and that pulls the MCBs slightly out of line and makes the cover awkward to fit.

The MCBs and RCDs are very reliable and have decent quality screws which means you can tighten them nicely without them snapping, stripping or shearing like some makes.

Hager boards are made of softer more flexible plastic, this stops shattering and splintering and is a deliberate design feature. Even to the point the knock out for the tails can be torn out cleanly with your fingers!. The only thing they suffer with, as has already been said, they don't like uneaven surfaces.

They could save themselves a couple of pence per board by binning the spirit level. Like a lot of others no doubt, I use a level to put a pencil line where I'm mounting the board and without fail the little internal level in the board is off. It just seems a pointless addition to me.

I like the removable top section design, the plastic tab clips make it easy to refit too.

Couldn't agree more!

MK Sentry DB's changed about 4-5 years ago to complete with other £50 DB's, something had to give to reduce the price so much and that's why I reckon it is now the poorest quality board in my opinion. Crabtree Starbreaker, Hager, Wylex, BG (in that order) for me.

Not consumer unit but their 3 phase boards.
Due to the site I work on stipulating fuses must be used and not MCBs a contractor fitted a Hager board with BS1361 carriers(LS201). When Hager was asked about a lockout device for these carriers their reply was there isn't one and suggested using a seal similar to what is used on meters.
Can't see how that can comply when carrying out a safe isolation?
