After explaining, as I went along with the client, I could see they were getting increasing frustrated at the number of faults I was uncovering. (Not that that stopped me).
Turns out that another guy had visited this site, found that there were faults but rather than identifying them...
OK! A bit of a filler for you... whole story.

The cable I mentioned above goes to a metal box on a post. From there it supplies an outhouse (as mentioned) and some stables some 40m away.
The outhouse is subsequently fed witha 2core and Earth rubber cable which is jointed...
