Two RCBOs tripping together, no cross-connection. Need help…

So, an update - UK power networks came out that night at 9pm (very impressed with that) - checked everything at the customer's cutout, the neighbour's cutout, and also checked the 'sub'??? (Transformer?) This is second hand info from the customer, so I'm not sure exactly what was checked...

Two RCBOs tripping together, no cross-connection. Need help…

Thank you for this post Lucien Nunes - it explains something I knew could happen, but could never explain how it could happen! The basic description of how an RCD works leads to the conclusion that nothing upstream should be able to affect an RCD. Thanks for taking the time to explain it...

Two RCBOs tripping together, no cross-connection. Need help…

I think you’re onto something there – I got the customer to ask around in the street last night, and one of his neighbours two doors down had exactly the same issue at exactly the same time, so I am thinking there is a problem with the supply in The Street. I’ve got him to raise the issue with...

Two RCBOs tripping together, no cross-connection. Need help…

Ha, this house is full of tech! I wanted 500v test but there are smart switches, smart appliances, wall Mount TVs… I bottled it. Surely the 250v test would reveal a problem ? All readings were >99M

Checked for crossed neutrals, it’s not that. Can’t rule out an unterminated cable somewhere but the tripping doesn’t link with rain. And that would only take out the one RCBO.

Rodents - Very unlikely. Urban property. Kept immaculate. Recently gutted and refurbed (2 hrs ago ish)

100% sure. No continuity between the separate circuits. Also different cable sizes (6mm, 2.5mm. 1.5mm)

That makes sense but wouldn’t that show when testing insulation resistance between these circuits? I get >99MOhms L-L, L-N, N-L, N-N

Two RCBOs tripping together, no cross-connection. Need help…

I was recently called to a domestic nuisance tripping job, dual-RCD Wylex board with one of the RCCBs tripping intermittently, mostly during the night. TNC-S, rewired couple of years ago (not by me). Three circuits on this RCCB: Cooker, Downstairs sockets, Downstairs lights (I know - dumb...

    Garden lighting issue

Just had this exact problem… Knightsbridge spike lights, 3 years old, it’s the carp cable they are made with. it was below 1MOhm and would trip the RCD after about 2 minutes of being switched on. I re-flexed the lights in question and all test >500MOhm now.

Lewden 100a switch fuse burnt out

No I didn’t, but that’s a good call. I’ll put the clamp meter on in max/min mode and see what it gets to. It was an all electric 4 bedroom house (underfloor heating throughout) on a cold frosty morning with the lady at home running appliances. Could be a big number.

No, bone dry, inside a fairly modern, heated house
