I have lad working with me at present on a outside job really quick learner, good with his hands and uses his head but yesterday he asked why is the primary insulation so tough and why is the copper so brittle in SWA I have never though about it I just accepted it answers, anyone,

Insulation; The cable doesn't need to flex once installed and goes towards the total mechanical strength of the whole cable.

Copper; same answer as above.
 
Yep! ... inner sheath is for insulation purposes, the outer sheath is environmental protection of the inner sheath as the chemical content of the 2 may vary so then will the properties of them...

Copper isn't brittle .... copper isn't mixed either so all cable copper will have the same attributes and properties unless contaminated or overheated.
