Basically it's a system where the trucks electrical system is isolated from the trucks metalwork and chassis dont know what it is for anthing else but I hope that points you in the right direction.

Floating earths are used in generator sets.
There is a bit of info here IET Forums - Generator supplying portakabin

Google generator floating earth too.

im asking this question because its a set up in our UPS system on site. ive read the link which has gave me a better insight but does this mean that a floating earth should be used whenever a generator or form of power supply is connected to earth via an earth spike???????? because our UPS is fed from a DB which provides the earth but still has this floating earth system. confused!!!!

i was told by niceic if the mains cable was chopped (main earth ) and ups kicked in you would have no earth so you have to have a seperate earth near ups
