Discuss City and guilds 2396 ? in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

it's your own personal situation that will determine the qualification's relevance. only you can decide if you need it, or not.

if you're looking to get a jib tech' card, then it'll probably come in handy. but you have to be 'approved' graded for about 5 years (as well as having all kinds of managerial experience) before you can be graded as a technician.

if you're looking to get off the tools and into a design environment, then i'm not sure how much use it'll be. most of the design jobs you see advertised are asking for degrees/HND's.
