I was skimming through the NICEIC site guide and this little section threw me:

I tend to generally clip my cables rather than use Oval or Capping, but is this saying the NICEIC or even the IET now want you to always use capping/oval?

Not disputing what you are saying bobcat 1, for the life of me, I just cant see how a piece of plastic sheathing, or plastic oval conduit will provide ANY protection from a Plasterers trowel, these things are sharp, and the way Plasterers wield them about, almost make them into a weapon, bluudy lethal things, trowels not Plasterers.

This is nothing new that Regulation was in the 16th Ed and something similar in the 15th Ed, Reg 523.33
I would never leave cables exposed and whilst oval conduit may not be a 100% solution it nevertheless gives adequate protection.

I use both. Using clips to hold capping into the wall.

Admittedly, not used capping or oval for years now. - must be the better class if customer that has brick walls in their house.

I’ve never capped or used conduit when doing domestic work, these days they rarely plaster straight on to the wall. It’s always dot and dab then plaster which avoids the need for capping, tin hat on!!!

You seen how some plasterers apply adhesive, with the trowel at 90 deg to the wall

If im honest i tend not to hang about and watch the muck monkeys at work, they tend to fling the dab on anyway. Out of the 500+ plus homes i worked on for my apprenticeship the only damaged caused to cables was by dry-liners screwing them or plumbers melting them, ive not once repaired a trowel damaged cable.

Totally agree with above i dont usually cap any of my cables in domestic as they are dot and dabbed on the wall then boarded onto that and i have never had a problem granted only done maby 50 houses but still. I do agree most of the problems i have had have been due to dry liners screwing into cables

You are a VERY brave man not capping when the plasterer will be getting his sharp trowel out..................

And Pete - I disagree with you.......... never had a cable damaged (by a plasterer) where its capped...
Not really because when I was house bashing we used Split oval metal conduit and metal sheathing
