Anyone know of a decibel meter app, and/or a decent sound recorder?

Im doing an EICR for a family member on a flat they rent out.... so far found no earth to the gas pipe, but that’s a different story...

Upstairs neighbour has pounding bass music playing, and it’s getting rediculous.
move tried downloading various apps, but nothing can record the sound properly, or give a decent dB reading. Ones I’ve tried give a floating 40 to 50 peaking at 70 odd at times.... but I can’t record the actual noise.
Tried iPhone built in voice recorder and video, but it’s not picking up.

The upstairs flat is housing association tenants, and I’m sure they’ve had a warning before about noise.

If it's largely bass frequencies, the iPhone mic probably won't have a low enough frequency response to accurately measure or record the sound.

You might be better off hiring a good quality sound level meter.

Without going into too much detail, this is a very complex area! The only people who will ever be able to adjudicate on whether sound pressure levels are 'acceptable' or not is Environmental Health, who will only ever use their own methods and recordings - so - if it's that kind of resolution you're looking for then contact them and stop wasting your own time and maybe money on trinket apps!

Fair point, there. And I was thinking the iPhone couldn’t record such low frequency sounds, as it picked me up walking away from the phone, but not the bass noise.
Even holding the phone as high to the ceiling as I could didn’t help.

I’ll just tell them that there was noise from above. As they’ve been reported before, it won’t come as a surprise.

Just might stop her getting a new tenant herself.
