Ive been asked to do some jobs next week, they want the inverters placed adjacent the cu, is this quite common practice? i thought they would go in the loft space?
I assume to reduce the volt drop.

Am i ok to pass the dc down through ceiling in pvc conduit?

also one job is 16 panels 1 string, the other 12 panels 2 strings, why would they want to split it into 2? Just wondered for my own knowledge really.

voltage drop is an oft missquoted problem. use the right size cable and it isn't a drama.
I have just done 2jobs with an external cable run, through the wall to a downstairs cupboard with the inverter and CU inside. No dramas. means the customer can see the readout on his inverter, which keeps cooler and is more accessable and it's an easier install.
just keep your AC and DC physically seperated
