My house is totally gutted and I’ll be doing a complete rewire. I’m more than likely just going to do a conventional rewire but with all the smart systems etc that are out there part of me is inclined to go in that direction just to get the experience of installing such things. As I’m over 50 part of me is very reticent to instal devices controlled from a phone as I have enough trouble fighting with Wi-fi and passwords as it is. Any good control systems out there worth looking at?

I would run cat 5 or 6 to each room , especially where tv's and computers may be used.

WiFi is ok but not reliable imho.

I've got 12 cat 5 ports around our house ...

You may not want to install the technology now but it would be worth running neutrals to lighting switch positions, data cable into each room etc for future use.
Makes sense, definitely be doing that. Already refurbed an old workshop into an annex and my mate who’s time served proper spark advised that.

can't have cat myself. I'm allergic to the buggers. no dog ports either. when they want to go for a wee, they just have to wait till i open the door.

had BG doubles with USB in for 12 months. no problems.

Already used a load of BG Nexus flat plate doubles with USB. All fine so far. Will def network a load of CAT6. What are folks doing TV / coax / satellite feeds?

I would run in shotgun satellite feeds to the main TV area etc. The likes of Sky now use a WiFi mesh so adding new boxes is pretty much hassle free.

Everything seems to be 'Wi-Fi'd' nowdays; had no connection problems myself. Unless you've got a massive pad with 2' thick walls.

Edit and don't get one of those Alexa things; Alexa turn on the standard lamp. Turn it on yourself you lardy arse!
