guide to pricing for newly qualified electrician

Afternoon all,

Im recently qualified and looking to do small jobs on the side. I ll be honest and admit I have no clue with regards to pricing and so am looking for some advice. Ive got a few small jobs such as one is replacing ten light fittings and was wondering what electricians would charge and what's reasonable...midlands based here. Not sure if price per point or an hourly rate would be based.

i'd start off by estimating the time for the job. including travel and any trips for materials.then x your hourly rate that you have calculated, allowing for paperwork,call backs, holidays, sick time,( 40 weeks working per ear is about right), then addcostof materials+ 20%. hourly rate midlands should be £30 - £35/hour minimum..

once you got it right, you could then start pricing per point, allowing extra for awkward cable runs/customers. and fancy accessories.

£40 to fix it. £60 if you watch. £90 if you've had a go yourself.

Pretty much every job that you ever undertake will take longer in reality than you allow for

So based on my experience if you think it will take 3 hours , it will probably take 4 hours

Price hourly £40-50 per hour , this way you will actually feel worth something and allow you enough in the kitty when things go ---- up from time to time

For small jobs for a sole trader you have to be realistic.

I'd start by summarising your weekly overhead and your expected earnings then dividing that by the number of hours you'd like to work.

Include travel time and parts runs, trips to the wholesalers.

£40-50 an hour may sound like rock star money but how little of that you see will surprise you.

So, a simple "add a socket" job, plasterboard next to existing socket.

Check supply characteristics, earthing, bonding and testing of existing socket circuit is going to take you 0.5hrs minimum.

Unloading all required tools and components 0.25hrs.

Chop in new back box and install the new socket, 0.5hrs.

Testing and certification 0.5hrs

Tidying up and getting all you crap back on the van 0.25 hours.

This is the perfect scenario with no existing faults and everything goes as planned, less common than you think.

Add on travel and shopping and your looking at a half day job, 4hrs @ £40-50/hr so £160-£200.

Work that up to a 40hr week and your looking at £1600-£2000.

Well no, firstly you'll struggle to bill for every hour you work, to bill 40 you may well be working 50-60.

Secondly, your costs add up quickly....Insurances, van payments, schemes, fuel, employment costs, pensions, tools, consumables, advertising and any more I've forgot.

You'll do well to keep half of what you bill.

Very roughly for every £60ph that I am on a chargeable job I reckon £20ph actually end up in my back pocket after all my expenses are deducted and the tax man gets his pound of flesh
