Hi there

I have an electrical water heater. It has two switches one main immersion one boost. The main one has gone hot and won't work :( can I just use the boost? Also it has a 13a plug in the main is that enough? Is that why its seized up? It went very hot beforehand:(

Can you post pictures? Usually there are two heating elements; the main one heats the whole tank but the other only the top part of the tank, quicker but you don't get as much hot water stored. The switch probably overheated due to a loose connection in the back, or just bad contact due to age. It's not due to being connected via a 13A plug, the switch will only overheat due to a problem with the switch itself. However the use of a 13A plug is not commended because the plug fuse clips tend to burn out eventually from the long usage at high current. Pics will show what the best course of action to repair will be.

Here it is..wierd set up :( I cant work it out as the lights only come on with the main switch not the boost.

The cable from the Main Immersion switch runs through the timer the Immersion Boost does not. The Main Switch looks like it needs replacing and if the device protecting the circuit is 16 or 20A I would fit a 20A double pole switch and not a 13A fuse connection unit.

The immersions appear to be 1.5 but not sure about the lash up from the stat but doubt that is anything to do with the immersions.
