Hi, I browsed the forum previously for clarification, and found it very helpfull. I logged on today as I'm thinking of getting a burglar alarm and CCTV in my home. I've been qualified for around 15years but never fitted one(industrial electrician), so I was hoping to get my head full of info(and not look a plank) before I get some quotes.

i can't seem to access the correct forum? Is it blocked to new members?

thanks, Steve

As Ian has stated the CCTV and alarms forums are closed to anyone outside of that sector of the industry. This is mainly due to alarm codes for panels etc.

nothing to stop you posting your queries in the general section.

plenty of plug & play CCTV gear. try maplins or MIE CCTV. as for alarm, decide whether to go for hard wired or wireless detectors. Texecom, Honeywell ( ADE) and Risco do some good equipment.

May be start off by starting a thread in the general forum and see what comes back. Please include as much information as possible AND reply to questions - then you will get people onside.

Thanks for the replies. I figured it would be something like that.

I've had a guy round this morning, he said the newer wireless systems are quite good. If wireless is an option ill probably install myself. I am looking at possibly incorporating a couple of cameras, so I'll look into the system mentioned earlier, and post a thread in general.
Are wireless door sensors available?

There are plenty of mickey mouse wireless on the market from B&Q etc, And Although there easy to fit, they are a totally waste of money. Visonic, Texecom and Menvier are professional systems, meeting Grade 2. Again easy to fit, but you may find the programming difficult.
CCTV, the higher the tvl the better the picture quality, so 300tvl is going to be poor quality, 800tvl is going to be good, and HD is going to be poor digital quality.

Out of interest, I have access to the CCTV section, I can see it all, we as a company carry out work with CCTV and alarms, yet I don't have a CCTV badge??

Is it a case of ask and you shall receive?

Damian, are you sure you still have access as there was a forum glitch that gave automatic access to all members with arms status which has been resolved. Could you please check as you should not have access without the badge. Just let me know before I give you a badge and access.

Agree as I had access to it also the DIY forum as well and could only read but not post, now that has been taken away when a post about posting in the DIY section was made

You're quite right, it seems I no longer have access.

Ian you now have access back into the CCTV alarms section. As for the DIY forum access, to read the posts in that forum have been removed and are now only visible to DIYers or members that want to assist them. This was a step we had to take as certain members of that forum were being berated for answering DIY questions.

That's good at least I now know the change to the software is working. You now have access and a shiny new badge. :)
