I did an EICR and as I was doing the RCD trip times the circuits tripped as they should but then as I turned it back on the upstairs lighting stayed off (the breaker for the circuit is on) there is power coming out the circuit but none of the upstairs lights will switch back on. If anyone has any ideas to what it could be that would be amazing, the only thing I can think is that there has been an added breaker in the loft by people who have done the bathrooms.

possible guess would be that there has been some work done in a bathroom and a second RCD fitted to comply, encompassing the upstairs lights.

Did the lights definitely work immediately before the RCD tests.
I'm wondering if you unknowingly damaged something with IR tests and didn't realise until later on.
Sounds more like another RCD somewhere though.

Yes I had done the RCD then check them afterwards, I did think of this but it wasn’t the IR test as I’d noticed they were not working before doing it

This is what I thought, the client is adamant nothing has been added but you never know, I’ve had a look in the loft but didn’t see anything on first visit. Going to have a full look tomorrow when I go back. They had their bathroom done they said 10 years ago but it looks a bit newer than that

Check for power at switches, work back to source.

Check your neutrals at the board.

Strange if all the lamps failed at same time.
This is what I have been doing, the thing is that all the lights (up and down) are on the same circuit breaker (2 cables) both have power out but nothing at the switches

I might be imagining it, but I think some FCU RCD and similar would trip on an open neutral fault, so it might be the tripping of the RCD made it think such a fault had occurred and it tripped.

Assuming there is such a FCU hidden somewhere...

I found some RCD sockets at my parents read around 20k on IR testing 250V, but not sure if they would go high if tripped. Might be worth seeing if you see anything like that.

I'm going to judge you by my standards, and suggest you may have inadvertently left a loose or disconnected conductor, either line or neutral, during your inspection. It's probably at the CU, or at one of the accessories that have been removed for close inspection.

A quick voltage test between all 3 conductors at an upstairs light should give you an idea whether it's line or neutral.
