Hello World!
I'm Brad, 26 from Surrey. Recently completed my level 2 & 3 tech certs to add to my existing level 3 P.A.T qualification I obtained in my previous job as a technical services technician in the entertainment lighting industry. I was there for 5 years, then made the leap into the construction industry and decided to re-train and aim to become an electrician. Since then I have been working alongside a small team within a shop fitting company.
I actually need some advice too, while I'm here....
The company I am working with are not predominantly an electrical contractor as we are mainly a multi-trade company, so my electrical experience is very sporadic at the best of times. I have had a fair amount of electrical experience working on various commercial and residential jobs that we have done working along-side another electrical contractor. I’m 26 now and decided to start my training in college quite late in life as an adult learner on weekends, so I feel I’m on the back foot already. I am married and have a mortgage and other commitments now so apprenticeships are not a viable option for me anymore due to financial obligations. I believe the only way forward for me is to acquire my NVQ and AM2 to start to be seen as more competent in the industry and to somehow bypass the need to have gone through an apprenticeship, say at 18 years of age?
Am I on the right track here? As recently I have been thinking of packing in the whole idea as it’s proving to be increasingly difficult to find solutions online to make a career as an Electrician at my age when I never completed a formal apprenticeship?
I am a keen, driven individual that just wants to make a good career as an electrician. Is it even possible to begin a career as a 'sparks', when you haven't gone through the motions of completing an apprenticeship?
Would really appreciate some advice on this.
Cheers!
