I start a new job next week, house bashing all surface trunking.

To all the guys that do this day in and day out is there a kind of system or set way to knock these out.

I imagine you have to keep everything exisiting live for as long as possible. what do you guys do about using existing trunking, or when lights are already centred in rooms.

what about the board change.

it would be interesting to hear what a few of you guys do, to knock these asap, any systems you use, or set ways on running cables, using existing trunking or conduit, and how you go about board change.

cheers

depends how long you got on job, usually drop upstairs lights in, leaving backboxes if theres an earth term on them, tie cpc together on old/new s/d to pull it in then bang ring in upstairs feed into old c/u upgrade bonding have a cup of tea, tidy n head home.
some firms knock them out in a day so just rip the lot out.

ive done loads, make sure you have some good battery drills, flat bits, and a 18" 20mm maisonary bit, put all your trunking and boxes on1st and make sure you have the strappers that fits in the ceiling trunking so it keeps the cables in place, use some 100x50 trunking down to the board, depending on the existing conduit you might be able to pull the light feeds this saves running 25mm trunking to the light fittings which looks crap.good luck

Are these voids or occupied??? bungalow, house??

If they're occupied houses I always try and do it in satges i.e wire all upstairs lights first with the existing still in place, then disconnect existing upstairs lights and 2nd fix new ones in place.

Then upstairs ring, downstairs lights etc etc.

Breaking up into circuits at a time makes it easier IMO particularly when you are trying to keep stuff like fridges and cookers etc working for the customers.

These are occupied houses, flats. 2 and 3 bed. 5 days max on 3 bed house 4 days on flats

at what stage are you guys changing c.u I suppose bearing in mind keeping power and lighting on for as long as possible.

if you have exisiting lights in middle of ceiling, when or would you kill supply to old circuit, second fix new lights in, then wire to old board temp, until new board installed.

At any point do you use exisiting kit.

just trying to get clarification. I know every one is different, including jobs.

I am used to new new build and renovation rewires.

happy days your going to have so much fun, the tennants allways fill the cupboard where the db is with there stuff, and wait till you do one where the man who smokes a 1000 smokes a day and doesnt open any windows and only has fryups, word of warning let someone else wire the kitchen.

Oh.....the tales I could telll.....for another thread maybe.;):)

The stories that could be told ! the 1000 smokes a day is one of the worst. This particular woman also smoked at least 60 a day, and also thought I couldnt hear her,she sat in a lounge chair all day and didnt move, just smoked. She was however a very famous singer from the 1950's BBC Radio, and it was an education looking at her photographs on the wall. However one has to frequently work downstairs, run upstairs etc, and the reverse depending on what your doing. She thought I couldnt hear her when I went upstairs and used this oportunity to let rip the loudest Farts I have ever heard. It creased me up everytime she did it. As soon as I hit the landing it was a matter of counting to five till she let the first one go, I couldnt work for ten minutes each time, trying to stop laughing.

First thing one morning, I was greeted by one guy lying on the floor, his Mrs draped over the chair drunk, and a third person lying on the settee waving his bottle of cider asking me if I wanted a drop

Had to edit this to include the most sweetest vision I ever had removing an old pendant one morning

The sun was shining through the patio doors,me up a ladder and the gourgeous twenty something daughter floating around this kitchen
She had on a negligee that was totally invisible with the sunlight shining on it and nothing under that
Her and her mother were completely unaware of the sight
I removed the pendant then screwed it back up a couple of times, got my mate from upstairs and he fitted and unfitted it a few more times
We were saved in the end by a mean nasty cloud
What a memory that was

Forgot to add, what you must get if your working in trunking is a trunking cutter, drop it in the jaws and close perfect straight cut in a tenth of a second. I was given mine and havent a clue where to get or who makes, I would take a photo and post but I have left it on site tonight as working today or the plumbers would have nothing to wire into tomorrow. Let me know if you need a piccy and willdo tomoorow night for you, but me thinks someone gonna help in a minute with a link.

That was quick !!! quick tip, to raise the blade ( my mate watched me struggle to use them for ages, laughing his head off) pull the handles apart.

What are they called what are they called? I want one they look lethal!

Des you lucky, lucky so and so. I've often wondered and hoped about the sights I may see when up ladders looking through windows..... Nothing yet.

Cut all power and connect up a temp board with an rcd and couple of sockets on it
One spark up wiring and one down trunking and fitting and consumer unit
A third helper type who will strip out all old stuff and put up trunkings and make tea

Unless you can complete in a day ( nigh on impossible with the quantities nowadays)
Leave the up lighting intact, complete the downstairs and bedroom sockets and just connect new supply to up lights at days end
Do that up lighting next day along with the up lighting of the next property reversing the first house method
Three in a week with an early finish on the friday

Memories :)
