People with 10+ posts should not now see Google ads?

Please reply and let me know what you can see?

(This is Google ads, not the sponsors - who keep the forum free to use)

Fair enough matey :)
I've been getting these style popups when I go to another page from your post here for example
No idea if that's meant to be the case or not

Site is transformed on my phone. I can actually see the posts now, without searching through all the spam for them.
Switching to my laptop, I got the adblocker message. Switched it off, and, so far at least, no ads have appeared.

And here we go.....
Received an email notification of a new post to this thread, opened it on the laptop, and here's a large ad between the new post and the reply box. Also a string of them down the right hand side, in the middle of the 'new posts' column.
Now I've been directed to a full page ad when I clicked on one of the new posts.
Why has the site (on a laptop) suddenly started complaining about ad blockers? It's definitely still needed.

I'm seeing google ads all over the page once I disabled adblock. If that's permanent then I'm afraid you'll chase me back to Oz.

Does it take a bit of time for it to take affect?

Laptop looks clean, but (I) phone still has drop down ad, a couple just above this reply box and the odd full page pop-over.

I hope I don’t have to reset cache or something inntge browser, as last time I did that I lost my Wordl streak.

No change here.
On the phone there are ads in posts, between posts and at the beginning.
When I click on new thread, or really anything, you then get a full page ad.

This mob have a good platform and plenty of code options for ads. Excellent customer support unlike goggle!
Can't really change such an established ad system on a website like ours. Adsteera would also just make money out of money that should go towards running the forum. A sort of man in the middle that you don't need.

Thats called a vignette ad and I'm just testing that one for now for a percentage of the visitors in general (doesn't have to be logged in users like) .

No shouldn't have to reset anything mate. There's must be a rogue ad somewhere. Anybody 10+ posts should only see sponsors. I'll get on it matey.

Yeah for now. Is everybody getting those now?

That's not meant to happen.

Give us a couple of hours and I'll drop back on it.
yep I've had a few one for the past while just assumed it was normal haha
No worries thanks

I've not had any requests to disable adblock plus and still use the forum on a laptop without issue.

One problem I do have is regular updates to advertising cookies which must be accepted in order to continue using the forum. These regular updates require me to spend an extraordinary amount of time unchecking default settings I choose not to agree to.

My understanding of the carry over EU legislation in place in the UK is that such assumed consent was outlawed several years ago. I may be wrong on that point and it may be that certain 'fair use' allowances are made, but the sheer inconvenience and hassle of these updates brought me to the decision that I would no longer provide financial support for the forum. In my opinion the policy in place is counterproductive - if one provides financial support, and in return no longer have to view excessive advertising, then it makes sense that those advertisers would no longer need to be placing tracking cookies on my devices.

The adchoices boxes are coming and going?
Might be fine for a day or two, then suddenly reappear.

On Safari, Iphobe11, and I don’t close the tab, just close the browser.

From my PC it's like night and day. Much better.
Same from my phone.
Thanks. :)

The constant request to allow ads on my desktop make it unusable very annoying.

Exactly this. Extremely annoying, to the point of making me go off to look at another forum.
Have you tried a browser called Brave? It is Chromium based, so very similar to Google Chrome, but is excellent at blocking a lot of things such as ads.

I'd need to log out to see how it is with this forum, but I find it great for reducing ads and pop ups on most websites.

Have to say that Firefox settings provide excellent options where advertising and tracking are concerned. Maybe it's time I tried their mobile browser again, after not getting along with it upon release many years back.

I find I get a lot of ads on YouTube with Firefox - but then again, I haven't tinkered with any settings as I don't use it very often.

Thought I'd been using Adblock Plus, but now see it's AdBlocker Ultimate.

I've read that Youtube have lately cracked down on adblockers, but I get nothing at all during videos - ever. I also run Ghostery and NoScript to combat the worst effects of tracking, but notice default settings for both are quite liberal on Youtube.

Watching on Youtube mobile app is entirely different matter.

Have you stopped the constant badgering to allow adds on my Browser when I access this site?

I suspect that if you are still being badgered, the answer is no. If no badgering is occurring, the answer is yes. That is assuming the badger can be controlled...

Have you tried using a different browser that may have more ability to block badgering?

I think with the changes dan is making, whether positive or negative, the site is being “reset” each time….
so when you open the page afresh, it’s having to go through the cookies and ads question each time.

FYI @Dan the little black search dot is back with me, along with a google search bar which is new. Adchoices are also back.

Strangley enough I haven't faced the AdChoices confirmation for several weeks.

Kind of concerned about posting this as it'll be back now.

Come on, @Dan This isn’t funny anymore🤬

There’s a new adchoices pop up that fills the bottom half of mobile screen. No X on it to get rid of it.
So between the black search spot, the bottom half ad and other ads inserted inbetween messages on threads…. There are some moments I cannot see any forum content whatsoever.
See thumbnails for examples.

Opened littlespark's post above on my laptop, read that he was posting an example, saw that almost the whole of the bottom half of my screen was occupied by an ad, thinking that was the example.
At that point I realised that this wasn't the example, but a pop up on my own screen.
Ad blocker gets rid of it, but two seconds later, the screen greys out, with the "allow ads" banner right in the centre.
Way beyond a joke, and the site is close to unusable, and certainly not enjoyable, in this state.
Fix it, please, Dan, and fix it quick, before the forum collapses.

I recommend becoming a patron if you use the forum regularly. Costs very little, and I am currently using the forum with no adverts or hassle whatsoever on my Android device.

I should have explained.
Top image was trying to scroll with the bottom half covered, and search dot in place.
Second image was a mid-scroll, stopped at one of the ads between messages… just to show how completely covered the page was.

Typing this out, I see there’s no bottom half pop-up…. So I guess Dan is working on it as we speak.
Still the dot, and still the pop-over full screen ad when moving between pages. That’s an easy one to X off though.

@DPG whether patron or not, you should still be able to use a website with ads in place and no detriment in actually using the site.
I fully understand it’s a revenue income, and expect a few ads whatever site I’m viewing. I know every now and again, some glitch allows a multitude of ads to appear, and it’s down to Dan to find the cause and either remove it, or work around it. And I know that’s not a 5 minute job when it happens.

I've no problem with a strip of ads down the right hand side of my laptop screen, occupying about a quarter of the width. It's the ones that appear between the posts in a thread and the full screen pop ups between pages that are the problem.
All was fine on a laptop, before the current round of tinkering.

Hi people.

I was about to create a blog post with no ads on at all. In fact, yeah let's do that.

Bookmark this page. Share it out with others who might be asking about it on facebook or whatsapp or x or whatever.

Ads are fine as long as they don't appear in the string of a thread.
Typing this on my phone, and it took several seconds to find the reply box amongst the spam.

Something been changed in the last four hours? On the laptop again, the ads aren't intruding in the strings, and no pop ups between pages, even with no ad blocker.

Still have to agree to advertising cookies or go through the arduous process of custominsing them each time there's some update to advertising settings. I stopped providing financial support to the forum for this very reason.

The inconsistency is very annoying, but I do understand the need to allow advertising on the site to provide income for its existence, but does seem to have become excessive, have to ask, how do non advert web sites exist? for instance "Whats app"

I'm part of the admin team on a classic car related on line forum. At one time we had so much traffic that we moved to our own dedicated server, which we financed, and still do, solely from the contributions of a few forum sponsors. No advertising at all of the random type.

I'm a patron, so generally get very little in the way of adverts.

However, when I am logged out, I still get very little in the way of adverts. As I mentioned before, I'm using the Brave browser on Android. Its default settings are very good at blocking ads and it also automatically rejects cookies for you.

If you're having trouble with excessive ads, or being asked to accept or reject cookies on a regular basis, it really is worth trying a different browser.

Ads aren't an issue and I have this particular browser set up to automatically reject all tracking cookies. As such I don't get asked to accept them and, at worst, see the request for a second before it disappears, but on this site (and to date this site alone) it refuses to work. The request wouldn't be an issue on most sites and could be handled in a few seconds, but here we have approaching 100 separate companies and most require disabling of individual 'legitimate interest' tracking.

In the past I was happy to support the forum and would certainly do so again in the future, but will not do so while the site attempts to also profit from details of actions online. I get that this is a commercial enterprise and not run as a hobby, but there seems to be no choice between advertising/tracking or direct financial support - the latter only provides the removal of more obtrusive attempts at advertising.

What is also unfortunate is that forum sponsor advertising (involving not insignificant cost), which is not obtrusive and which I'd happily view, is removed from view by ad-blockers along with more problematic advertising. It's up to Dan and Lou to run the forum as they see fit, but presently I'm of the opinion that certain sources of revenue could potentially cost more in the long term than the income they generate.

Just re-installed AdBlock and set it to pause on this site, No more adds in between posts, seems to work well on my MacBook Pro laptop.
