Discuss Kitchen Extractor Hood Isolation Location? in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi all,

I know that cooker/hob isolators need to be within 2m of the appliance but what about extractor hoods?

I was planning on having a flex outlet plate behind the ducting housing so it's out of sight and then having a FCU to isolate.

Does the FCU have to be in the kitchen or can it be in under the stairs cupboard which backs on to the kitchen?

Unlike a shower or cooker, I would of thought that a FCU for an extractor hood was for maintenance purposes and to fuse down the appliance.

Thanks

Hello Munch.

I would have a look at reg 537.3.2.4:

"A device for switching off for mechanical maintenance shall be so placed and durably marked so as to be readily identifiable and convenient for the intended use."

So if you you think it fits that criteria then it ok under the stairs. I'm guessing there must be a good reason why you don't want it in the kitchen as that would be the sensible place and the usual place to put it? Also, the cooker/shower switch IS for maintenance purposes.

I always prefer isolator`s adjacent to appliance, who wants keep getting on / off the steps when testing / fault finding ?
We all prefer to work safer, faster & in more convenient manner, when it`s not adjacent it encourages unsafe working.

I would want it int he same room if it were me.
I've seen them in the Kitchen cupboard next to the cooker hood, I've seen them plugged in to a socket in a cupboard next to cooker hood - Mine (not fitted by me) is above the cupboard next to the hood, cant see it and once you know it's there you can reach over to isolate.
