I have an old light in the workshop that has not been used for a long time and needs some TLC. First to put a name to it (not you, Marconi) wins a weekend for two in sunny Hertfordhire loading vans at the warehouse. You can ask questions about the pics.
First problem, this was jammed with hardened grease

I've put a silicon rectifier in place of the mercury arc for the moment. We need to do a risk / benefit analysis on bringing the mercury bulb because it might not be visible anyway. I don't want to move it if I don't have to.

Also mirror back in and ready..

This, people, is where our industry started in earnest, 150 years ago, when the earliest practical applications of the arc lamp offered a light brilliant enough to illuminate streets and buildings without gas or quicklime.

Filament lamps soon took over for low-intensity uses, but until the 1950s the carbon-arc was the only practical high-intensity, high-power light source for projection and searchlight duties.. Projection arcs such as this were widely superseded by xenon in the 1970s and 1980s.

A good morning's work, time for lunch.

UFO one of my favourite programmes takes me right back to my childhood just one series with 26 episodes. Mostly filmed in and around Pinewood studios no doubt lit by carbon arc lights.

I wish my work was as interesting as yours Lucien...

It's not always this interesting. We are known for the exotic but we have plenty of bread-and-butter projects too. I have more or less managed to wriggle out of nailing things to walls, pulling cable, rigging shows, etc. but it's nice to wire the occasional theatre dimmer room to keep a hand in, and MI work on the few occasions it's needed.
