It seems some companies here offer more services than the yellow pages. Is this the same in the UK? I remember my childhood electricians as electricians, carpenters as carpenters and plumbers as plumbers.

Will this affect the quality of work done?

Although as an electrician that depends on that field, you will be able to negotiate better deals with suppliers, in a limited area, there is a variety of demand, answer the demand.

what do customers prefer today, the handyman, or the best in the field absolute quality?

I'm a spark but dabble in plumbing when necessary, cos it's so easy in comparison! Don't touch gas though, obviously. Am crap at joinery so anything but the basics gets passed on to a joiner mate of mine. Some folk will have a go at anything I guess, but if I can't do a good job then I don't even try!

Plastering is part and parcel of a domestic sparks job, so I do that too. In fact, on occasion I end up just doing plastering jobs.
