Megger 1730 non trip loop....

my 1730 is a year old and going back to dover for a software upgrade and calibration,

i hear its sorted most faults out, still like it to much to change it....

Providing you ignore the dubious value of Zref, R1+R2 and two wire loop testing, the release of firmware version 2.01 appears to be stable and have the MFTs working the way they should have done at their release a year ago. Any further updates to the firmware should only be the occasional optimisation tweaks from now on (fingers crossed); time will tell.

Just received a brand new 1730 replacement (2.01).

Since my original post they managed to lose mine but all seems to have been solved now.

I've played with the 1720 this evening, and I noticed that the loop test when carried out at '2Lo' gave a much higher reading as the old fashioned no-trip '3Lo'.

0.39 ohms on 2Lo
0.18 ohms on 3Lo

A 10m or so cooker circuit with a Ze of 0.12 ohms when tested on 2Hi.

So the 3Lo seems within expectations, but the 2Lo just seems pointlessly inaccurate.

As stated in another thread, it was released "tested enough" (as in not enough), and we (sparkys) have been completing their final testing phase (User testing) and paying them for the privilege.

My contacts at Megger's Technical Department tell me they are:- still working towards a solution for the variable and inaccurate two-wire loop measurement and to expect further firmware tweaks in the coming months as this is now an iterative process (to me the whole development process has been iterative).
Personally I'm just ignoring two-wire loop measurement completely. I'm happy using the MFT within the current limitation and will now wait until the annual calibration next year for a firmware update by which time, hopefully, the iterative process will have achieved its goal and accurate two-wire loop testing will be at last be possible.

We haven't had any problems testing with Wylex RCBOs since firmware update 2.01. You could reverse the connections of red and black probes at the test-points (black on L, red on N and green on CPC), as a work-around solution, like we use to do earlier in the MFTs evolution.

I have mft1730, was getting wildly different readings on live zs non trip mode compared to an fluke 1653 i had, I sent it back to Megger and they updated the firmware version 2.05. On the l-pe setting you now have 3lo,2hi and 2lo options which you can flick through to suit, it seems ok now apart from 2lo and 3lo readings are totally different?, I've had nothing but trouble with the 1730.. :-( the fact is: I don't really trust the 1730's readings anymore, I've gotta say ALL the other functions are great... apart from the leads don't fit my r2 lead and socket and see, disappointed with it. i'm getting shot of it......
