mig/genny issue

A mate has a diesel genny 5 KVA MG 5000 1 LA seems to be the model, when using the mig it pulls the genny down to almost no power to weld,
he has tried a different genny and the welders ok, now how can I check the genny?, I suppose a applied load is the way to go but I really could do with some practical advice

The general Rule of Thumb calculation is:- 10KVA generator / 250A weld current.

You would need to load the generator with a high power load, something like a Load Bank, Carbon Pile, or for a home-made option 1kW radiant heater elements in parallel. With this test you should be able to confirm you have sufficient generator output to meet the Rule of Thumb. The reason extra generator capacity is required is because of the large losses caused by the high current switching transients and harmonics produced by the MIG welding action. You should be able to hire a Load Bank from most industrial Generator suppliers or Hire Companies.
