Number of LED batten lights required in garage workshop.

Hi All, I hope someone can give me a bit of advice on how many LED batten lights I should install in my new workshop. I am hoping to create lighting that will give a good even spread of light that will mean I can easily see what I’m doing no matter what part of the workshop I am in. I will be using woodworking machinery in the space so good light is paramount. The workshop is L: 8m x W: 3.4m x H:2.9m. I guess what I’m asking for is advice on the number of fittings I should install, given the above measurements. Thank you. I look forward to your comments.

What sort of woodworking machinery will you be using and you can always have two banks switched so have bright and then fecking bright.

Modern lighting I suppose doesn't suffer from stroboscopic effect like in the old days with fluorescents across the phases or not phased in factories with lathes and the like.

Hi All, Thank you so much for all your replies. I must admit, I did think my question was one that would not be an easy one to answer, given the variables around it. I will be using a band saw, pillar drill and planner thicknesser etc. I like the idea of having two banks. Especially as I can have it fecking bright

If you need f. bright then twin LED battens are the way to go. They can deliver up to 11000 lumens. In practical terms that is f. bright. Four of those and you would think you are at a football pitch light scene. You could easily get away with single battens delivering around 3-4k lumens. This is a more general light which while certainly allowing you adequate lighting wont give you that detail that the higher lumens out put would. I speak as someone who has built a classical guitar and know that the more light the better for very clear sight of lines and thicknesses. I would look toward the higher end lighting personally.

Hi Agin, I like the sound of the 11000 lumens. I think I’ll need sun glasses for that lot. They do sound like just what I’m after. With the walls and ceiling painted white the light should be really good.

Thanks for the reminder about the lumens. It’s not as easy to imagine light output with LED’s. If someone says 40w you can visualize it.

I done one with the same dimensions as your shed for my mate with a workbench the full full width at the bottom of the 'shed' . Above this I put two twin 6 foot triphosphor electronic fittings with EM fitting in the middle .
I also put another EM fitting at the exit.
Along the length I put two rows of the same, switched diagonally opposite. It is like daylight with them all on .
The set up is almost identical to yours regarding machinery , but with some metalworking machine tools too.
If you get the comparison between the LED and the T8 that should give you a good guide.

and go for daylight or cool white LED. warm white would make the place look like an essex boy's tan salon.

Honest I was agreeing about daylight - I have never been out of Northumberland lol.... What is a tanning salon? Is it where they butcher hinds of beef
