Last weekend I experienced a weird electrical fault with my 2010 Peugeot Boxer Van.
A little background - the van is a 2010 Boxer 330 2.2 Short Wheel base diesel. If you're not familiar, these vans are identical to the Citroen Relay an on most variants, the Fiat Ducato.
I have not been using the van much recently and it has been parked on my drive without moving for 9 months in all sorts of weather. I have never known it to leak water in before. As it had not been used for a while, the MOT expired and when tested, it failed on the windscreen that had a 'star' within the swept area. I had the screen replaced and duly obtained an MOT certificate. Shortly after that I went away on holiday, during which time, I'm told there had been a lot of heavy rain.
On my return I needed to use the van and last Saturday I drove it away. As soon as I moved it water started coming out of the interior light/overhead tray and running down the centre + both sides of the windscreen internally. The interior light is mounted in an overhead tray that goes across the whole van just above head height. The tray must be hollow as I could hear a sloshing noise when I went around corners indicating that there was water in it but when I felt up with my hand, there was no water on the trays.
I was on my way to an appointment and the water didn't seem to be heading to anywhere where it could cause damage so I continued. After driving around 25 miles all the dash lights came on for a few seconds and the temperature and fuel gauges went off. The radio, which was switched off, also came on and went off without being touched. This happened a total of 3 times and each time the same thing happened - all dash warning lights on, gauges off then back to normal. The van kept running throughout this fault. However, on the last occasion, the Air Bag light stayed on and has been on ever since.
When I reached my destination the radio, which had come on by itself but was crackling a little and going on and off, refused to switch off. By the time I finished my appointment the radio had turned off - possibly through the auto off feature.
The current position is that the airbag light is on and the heater fan works when it feels like it. To me, this sounds like its been caused by water possibly making terminals behind the dash short out but I don't understand why my airbag light has stayed on.
I will of course have to locate where the water is coming in, I suspect it might be something to do with the new windscreen but that's the least of my worries. Tracing this fault could cost a fortune - can anyone shed any light on what's happened? Is it possbile that water was the cause of the original fault and the short has caused some form of damage to the airbag system? Or is it likely that the short is still occuring in the airbag and therefore causing the light to stay on. Does the airbag system need resetting? Is that even possible. I'm going to try disconnecting the battery and touching the terminals together but that is probably just clutching at straws.
Help!!!
