It seems that another consultation has ended before the closing date (closing date 27-04-2012)!
[h=2]The Electrical Safety Council (ESC) has welcomed the report by the Communities and Local Government (CLG) Select Committee which supports the retention of Part P of the Building Regulations.[/h]
The Committee’s report presents the findings of an inquiry into the Building Regulations applying to electrical and gas installation and repairs in dwellings. It will feed into the Government’s ongoing review of the Building Regulations for England, which has been established with a view to reducing red tape and cutting costs.
The ESC is encouraged that the Select Committee considers Part P as ‘...adequate in its current form and …should not be reduced, although there is need for improvement in its operation.’ It also notes that: ‘From the evidence we have received, we are satisfied that Part P has been successful in driving up standards and in reducing the number of electrical faults’. This is particularly encouraging as Part P provides the only legal protection for householders in England having electrical work done in their homes and scrapping or watering it down could put users of electricity at risk.
The report also highlights the lack of public understanding of Part P and makes a number of recommendations in that regard. These include:

  • the labelling of electrical equipment sold by DIY stores to warn that it is illegal for an unregistered person to undertake most electrical work in the home without checks by a competent person;
  • the Government to coordinate industry efforts to raise public awareness of the need for electrical and gas safety;
  • any public awareness campaign should alert people to the dangers of using unqualified electricians and the need to regularly check electrical circuits in the home;
Phil Buckle, the Director General of the ESC, who was among those who gave evidence to the Select Committee during its investigation, commented:
“We welcome the recommendations made in the Select Committee report – particularly those relating to the need to increase public awareness and understanding of electrical safety and Part P in particular. Our research has found that just 20% of people in England and Wales had heard of Part P and, of those, over half stated that they either knew nothing about it, or very little.
“We also believe the ESC is ideally placed to support the Government in any public information activity, as our extensive expertise in both consumer and industry campaigning could help ensure an integrated approach to the promotion of Part P”.

There was never any chance that the Scam Providers were going to allow there cash cow schemes to come to an end!! They have made dammed sure that there word has been taken over anyone else's!!

Would love to see the reports and the statistics they provided to this committee, i bet those the submitted figures could be pulled apart, limb from limb so to speak!! lol!!!

Dont you just love living in a free democratic country like this It could be worse we all could be living in Russia where we would just have accept what is put in front of us or else.

Or I could be cynical as say we just think we live in a democracy because this is a little trick that is played on us when they tell us we just have to accept it in our name

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... Democracy is a word that allows the "common" people to feel like they actually have a say in how the country is run. You think that most of Britain agrees with the level of petrol duty? Of course not, but we are told that as we "voted" them in, we have to go along with what they tell us to do. One only has to look at local planning decisions to see that decisions are made based on factors other than what is best for the majority.

From the evidence we have received, we are satisfied that Part P has been successful in driving up standards

When its the scam providers giving most of the evidence then I guess they where always going to be led a merry dance.

Exactly!! These politicians have basically only listened or taken notice to those that have a big financial interest in keeping things exactly as they are!! Playing the safety card for all it's worth... Wonder if these providers brought up the fact that they have systematically lowered an electricians entry level standard, to little more than DIY level?? lol!!! As i have said before there is no-way they can claim a higher safety, since there introduction, there is plenty of evidence on this forum alone, to to counter that little or should i say Big fib!! In real terms, standards of work as well as safety have been diminished rather than enhanced... They are basically only interested in using there position within the domestic sectors Part Pee, to use both qualified and unqualified members as ''Cash Cows'' ....Full Stop!!

Couldn’t have said it better.
I’m totally disillusion and starting to lose all interest in the job altogether.

My so-called ‘assessment’ when joining one of the scams (wont say which one) was the most underwhelming thing I’ve ever done (obviously apart from the ridiculously easy “can you read” 17[SUP]th[/SUP] Ed update exam, and people pay for a course to pass this???).
I couldn’t believe how easy the scheme assessment was, by answering some very basic questions (i.e. name 3 types of fault, name 3 earthing systems, what size bonding etc) and plugging your MFT into a socket you’re in. Well my twelve-year-old son could have passed that, with a couple of hours of revision.

So yes I agree, that’s all the scams are interested in, competing with each other to get your money. And the Gov well, you’d have to be really naive if you thought they would listen to anybody apart from the paying lobbyists ie. the scams and the ESC(NICEIC). As for democracy, what’s democracy, an illusion of choice? between tweedle dee and tweedle dum, they’re all the same, whoever you vote for…..
