I have a small mechanics shop in a rural area with no access to 3 phase. I picked up a air compressor cheap and knowing at a min. I will need a phase converter. I don't think a VFD or a static converter can do it. Is it even possible to run a 3 phase 30hp 230/460 90 amp Dual rotary screw air compressor on 200amp 220 single phase?

You may well have difficulty with this one.

the info you have given suggests a dual voltage motor that can be configured for 230v 3 phase (the output of a single phase vfd)
a 22kw (30hp) vfd is not a common off the shelf item although some manufacturers do list them.

I would expect the supply requirements to be in the 100 to 125A sort of range.

a rotary converter will work but be careful about the rating of it.
you would want one rated at least 40hp.
this is to ensure it has enough power to start such a large motor without stalling.
also for continuous use I would want to see it loaded to a maximum of 75% of its full output capacity.

I understand that you got this cheep but is it anywhere near the sort of size you require? I know some fairly large factories with 100+ staff that use compressors of that sort of size.

I do a lot of sand blasting and my sponge jet blaster uses a lot of air more then my big atlas compressor can keep up with and that is a 60 cmf unit. I was hoping to use this one for the size of it (tankless) and alot quieter. Also I can have more then one person blasting. I'm at a cross road with everything cause my atlas motor (10hp single phase) just crapped out and its spend the $2000 on a motor for that or having this rotary screw hooked up.
