STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS - BRUSH

Good memories of Brush gear up until the last switchboard. Contractors put the board in and two of us for the company inspected it. The result, a check list of abysmal failures. The board was replaced with a GEC unit.

    Hot SWA gland

Only one end of the singles should be earthed. It’s usual to use a Paxoline gland plate at the switchgear.

    Will 208 volts be enough?

208V is within the band of permissible voltage variants. Now a question for you, is the equipment 50 or 60Hz?

    Nerves

Nerves calm down as experience grows. However don’t become complacent, that’s when things go wrong and cause you to loose face.

    Glasses

I'm long sighted in one eye, short in the other. Fun and games if you get the lenses in the wrong eye.

Circuits for Motors- how to in the UK?

Scott T transformers (2 phase) are still used on the railways for 25kV OH supplies.

When did they stop using imperial cable?

1970 was the official date but it could be years either side. As an apprentice I was using imperial cable, we weren't clearing the stores because of an EU dictate.

Parts for vintage service station lights..

I made light fittings using gas pipe. A local machine shop made conduit to gas pipe adaptors for me for about £1-50 each. Marvo did the same a few years back as I recall.

New breakers or add a sub panel

AHJ inspectors have the final say. Talking to them first makes sense to me. I’m a retired industrial engineer with an interest in international regulations/codes.

New breakers or add a sub panel

Before you or your licensed electrician do anything talk to the AHJ. Some panels will take a double lug making a sub panel easy. If the AHJ red tags the install it’s going to cost a lot more.

Any ideas how to solve this?

Capillary action will draw water from a nick in the outer serving to the termination glands. I wish you the best of luck finding the ingress point.

    Unskilled management v skilled knowledge

I spent much of my time before I retired behind a desk pen pushing and I hated it. OK I was doing mainly R&D (wreck and destroy) work which was interesting. Learn how the process works before telling someone else how to do their job.

Disconnect, grounding and mechanical protection requirements when bringing power to a chicken coop...

Have a look at section 250 in NFPA-NIC 2017 Areas with any livestock require special attention to earthing. Ufer or peripheral earthing would be my choice.

    Lost Neutral Voltage Calculation

The old way is to draw out the vectors. There’s probably an “App” on your phone by now.

Chance to see some working Mercury Arc Recifiers in London

There was a working 250kW MAR in the science museum electricity hall. Fantastic things to see working, a bit daunting to work on.
