rebuild BG consumer unit as mirror

I probably don't need to replace tails - just wanted to make it look nice. If there's even the remotest chance of a problem then it's not worth the risk. I think you're right - the test button basically replicates a L-PE fault. A N-PE fault won't necessarily cause a trip.

rebuild BG consumer unit as mirror

Hi, Does anyone know whether there's any technical reason why a BG dual-RCD (flexible) consumer unit could not be rebuilt as a mirror image i.e. left hand main switch. Do the RCDs work with L & N swapped?

Ipsc and Ipfc at sub distribution board

Yes, this is single phase & <100A. Thanks very much, this confirms what I thought - I couldn't find a proper explanation in any of my books on testing and inspection.

Thanks, I think I know what I'm doing now!

Ipsc and Ipfc at sub distribution board

Surely Ipsc is the maximum current that can flow as the result of a L-N fault so it's the L+ N impedance that's important not the R1+ R2 ??

Ipsc and Ipfc at sub distribution board

Hi, Hope someone can help. I need to test the prospective fault current at a garage distribution board (i.e. a sub board) but the no trip function of my tester will not work and trips the RCD which serves the garage circuit in the main board. As I understand it, the figure to take for...

    switched live from cooker hood

It is domestic. I suppose the fan on the extractor could be left on and the whole thing controlled by a wall mounted switch but it's not entirely satisfactory. Then, as you say, it's fairly straightforward (just the issue of the different circuit ratings)

    switched live from cooker hood

I am convinced there is a way of doing this using a contactor at the consumer unit (which is in the same room).

    switched live from cooker hood

I won't be taking the hood apart ('more than my job's worth' as they say)!

    switched live from cooker hood

Hi, thanks but the problem is that cooker hoods only require a permanent live - the switching is done inside the unit. So I need a switched live that is only live when there is current flowing in the supply to the hood.

    switched live from cooker hood

Hi, I have been asked to install a separate extract fan with overrun timer to operate whenever a recirculating kitchen cooker hood is switched on. Has anyone done this? I'm assuming I can 'create' a switched live using some sort of relay on the cooker hood load cable. Any ideas would be...

domestic installer assessment do i need a proving unit or check box

NICEIC assessor allowed me to prove on the live side of consumer unit main switch and didn't mention the use of a proving unit.

Should really have brown sleeving. I suppose it's not too greedy - only 6mm2.

Yes, I'll just just use a drill to make sure the clamp's tight :D

Yes, noticed that. Lots of discussion about that kind of thing - asked NICEIC inspector about it on last assessment - he said leave it alone. Asked him about requesting change to PME to overcome the problem - he reckoned TNS with 951 clamp and acceptable Ze is always preferable to PME. Who am I...
