Back box lugs and cross threads.

No, I took my huge fishing umbrella and sat perched on my tool box with the van radio on lol. One repair I had to do was supposed to have me remove a double deep backbox from a tiled kitchen wall in a school kitchen for a cooker switch because the lower £.5 had snapped off. It would have been...

Back box lugs and cross threads.

I carry M3.5 and M4, and yes they are invaluable. As mentioned, if the screw 'pops', then compress the lug slightly then re-tap. At the moment I am retrofitting bollards in a caravan park whereby I remove the top half of the attaching plate, leaving the bottom half of the plate attached to the...

    Am I nieve?

If you go out on your own you will work a lot more than 45 hrs a week me thinks. What are your 'in-work benefits'? i.e. van, holiday pay, pension, sick pay etc..? I have worked for several agencies and never had a problem being paid. With agency work though, they want regular reliable workers...

    Not my handy work

What;s the problem? Feed for outside lights? Sealant used, I assume no leaks so far. I would have probably gone out through the wall myself, but we don't know all the information.

    being mugged off by CEF

I wanted a new pair of side cutters while I was In Neweys the other week, They quoted me £29 plus VAT. I showed them the price from Screwfix, which was £28.99 all in and they beat it. i know it's not cable, but it illustrates the point of showing them the competition.

    Why aren't ring circuits banned?

I hate Ring Finals. Periodic testing is a pain. We tests some of our public buildings annually for licensing purposes and when there are over 50 distribution boards, the disconnecting and reconnecting of RFD circuits to prove continuity does more harm than good. This is my opinion, and I...

    Incentives for staff

Great to see I was on the ball with this one. Thanks for everyone's input. GMES, you don't have to be brown enveloping your way to winner of the Best Boss of the Year Awards. These great guys you have are an asset to you and they don't take you for granted if you are supplying regular well paid...

    Incentives for staff

With such a small already motivated team this could back fire and cause jealousy and resentment.

    Staff Parties

Local Pizza/ Pasta place at 6pm £10 a head, then into town for liquid carnage. I didn't go last year and i'm not going this year. I'll be cwched up in front of the log burner with re-runs of Top Gear on Dave.

Naked Ladies? the results for L-L and N-N should be within 0.05 ohms

Thanks for all your input. The case in question was a school that had been rewired approximately 5 years ago in twin and earth LSF. A previous electrician with the firm had checked connections in all socket outlets, I was to check in the DB. The DB connections were fine, so I tested again at a...

Naked Ladies? the results for L-L and N-N should be within 0.05 ohms

@ Risteard, the further investigation is what i have been tasked with, but I am seeking clarification of how much of a problem are these errant readings? The ring is continuous but the readings don't match. How much of a 'problem' is half an ohm in the real world, and where is the guidance...

Fly Leads on banjos (and naked Ladies!)

Lucien, we are talking of panels in dry conditions in primary schools with no evidence of corrosion. SWA bolted to the panel using roofing bolts, been tested and inspected for years, now suddenly it's an issue. I was thinking of using 4mm2 for the fly lead.

Fly Leads on banjos (and naked Ladies!)

Not private, but it got your attention. I just wish i could think of more enticing thread starters! What size of fly lead indeed? I would like more guidance on this with some firm science behind it too. other than the NIC say so. Thanks Voltz

Fly Leads on banjos (and naked Ladies!)

I have always used the panel to earth the (bolted) banjos but in my new job seem to be being sent around putting on fly leads from the bolts to the Earth bar. I'm told that this has been picked up by the NIC. I should clarify. The jobs I am being sent back on are not my own, but old(er)...

Naked Ladies? the results for L-L and N-N should be within 0.05 ohms

Thanks for your responses. I'd only come upon the 0.05 in regards to earthing and bonding, so just wanted a verifiable source other than the one I was given - 'its's just something I've always known'. I'm rather with the brigade that continuity is continuity, rather than being a slave to...
