Bit of an embarrassing one here but wondering if anyone can help.

Was called to a doctor's surgery yesterday to replace the battery in an emergency light. For the life of me I can't open the thing up. The diffuser doesn't rotate or push upwards, neither does the bezel, there are no screws or slots above the unit which is perfectly smooth. The only thing pushing out of the unit is the LED flashing red to show that the battery is dead. The whole unit twists very slightly but it feels as though if I force it it will snap away from the plastic conduit rose it's attached to.

I've attached some photos. Has anyone come across these before? Or am I going to have to try a big hammer?

Thanks.

You have my sympathy. I notice there are other similar lights there. You could try one of the others - maybe the one you need to change is stiff, if you can work out the mechanism on one of the other, it will give you confidence about the amount of brute force needed.

I had a case a couple of months ago where the lamp in the client's bathroom light fitting needed changing - they'd tried to get it off and failed, I had a good go but couldn't budge it. It was old and ugly, and the glass had already started to crack; they said, "Well if you need to smash it to get it off, go for it." So I did. The mechanism was simply that the glass screwed onto the metal fitting (i.e. there wasn't something I'd missed like a secret screw or lever) it was just jammed on solid, and couldn't have been removed without smashing it.

Hope your job goes better!
